Chapter 1 - Sign—or Lose the Other Arm

The baseball bat struck Alana Darcy’s bandaged forearm with a sickening thud.

Pain exploded through her shoulder.

Her body folded against the black marble desk, scattering legal papers across the glossy foyer floor. The burgundy inheritance folder nearly slipped from her left hand, but she crushed it against her chest.

“Sign—or lose the other arm,” Mark Darcy roared.

Her father stood over her in a dark navy suit, gripping the wooden bat as though violence were another family privilege.

Behind him, Yasmin Darcy calmly slid the transfer papers closer.

“Give us everything.”

Near the spiral staircase, Alana’s younger sister Gillian filmed vertically on her phone, smiling as if she were capturing entertainment instead of a crime.

Mark crouched until his face was inches from Alana’s.

He pointed the bat toward her uninjured arm.

“We’ll call it an accident.”

Alana’s tear-filled eyes moved from her father to Gillian’s phone.

Then toward the small black brooch pinned near her collar.

A tiny camera hidden inside it had recorded the threat.

Exactly as planned.

Alana lowered the burgundy folder onto the marble floor and reached for the uncapped pen with her left hand.

Her fingers trembled.

Not entirely from fear.

“Fine.”

Mark straightened.

Yasmin smiled.

Gillian moved closer to capture the signature.

Alana slowly wrote her name.

The instant the final stroke touched the page, the concealed phone inside her dress vibrated.

A tiny light on the brooch became steady.

Gillian’s smile vanished.

Alana used the desk to rise.

“Thank you for recording it.”

Mark’s face changed.

Outside the towering arched windows, a vehicle door closed.

Alana pressed a hidden button through the fabric of her dress.

The black tablet on the desk woke.

“The investigation just started.”

Mark looked toward the entrance.

Yasmin clutched the signed papers.

Gillian stared at her phone as the recording transmitted beyond her control.
