Chapter 9 - Mark Was Never the Heir
Vivian’s recorded message explained that Mark was not biologically related to Henry Darcy, the man whose name he carried.
Vivian had become pregnant before marrying Henry.
Mark’s biological father was Samuel Reed, a Black medical researcher whose early discoveries helped create the technology behind Darcy Biotechnologies.
Samuel died before Mark was born.
Henry agreed to raise Mark as his own.

Mark stared at the screen.
“My father was a thief?”
“Henry made a terrible choice,” Daniel said.
“And Mother hid it.”
“She protected you from a scandal you did not create.”
Yasmin looked furious rather than shocked.
“You knew,” Alana said.
Yasmin did not answer.
The investigator found the truth in her financial records.
Yasmin had contacted descendants of Samuel Reed and offered them money to challenge the company publicly after Mark gained control.
She planned to use the scandal as leverage.
If Mark inherited the shares, she would threaten exposure unless he transferred authority to her.
Mark looked sick.
“You planned to blackmail me.”
“I planned to protect our future.”
“By destroying my mother’s name?”
“Vivian destroyed it when she chose Alana.”
Alana watched her father’s rage collapse into grief.
For the first time, Mark understood that his entitlement rested on a history of stolen work.
He had attacked his own daughter to preserve control over a company that was never morally his.
Vivian’s final message continued.
“Mark, you were loved. You were not owed dominion.”
He sat down.
The words stripped something from him.
Not wealth.
Certainty.
Police entered the mansion moments later.
They separated Mark, Yasmin, and Gillian.
Mark did not resist.
Yasmin demanded an attorney.
Gillian surrendered her phone.
Alana held the burgundy folder against her chest.
