Chapter 10 - The Choice Vivian Left Her
Alana spent the night at a hospital.
Her forearm was fractured.
Not beyond repair.
The doctor warned that another direct strike could have caused permanent nerve damage.
Mark had nearly taken more than an inheritance.
Daniel sat beside her bed.
“You do not have to decide anything tonight.”
Alana stared at the burgundy folder.
“What would happen if I kept the family secret?”
“The company would remain legally stable.”
“And Samuel Reed’s descendants?”
“They would receive the trust Vivian established, but not public recognition or ownership.”
“What if I reveal it?”
“Expect lawsuits, headlines, and a temporary collapse in value.”
“Employees could suffer.”
“Yes.”
Alana closed her eyes.
Vivian had not given her an easy moral victory.
She had given her responsibility.
The next morning, Alana met Samuel Reed’s granddaughter, Dr. Lena Reed.
Lena was a respected biomedical researcher.
She knew parts of the history but had never possessed proof.
“My grandmother believed Samuel’s work had been taken,” Lena said. “She spent her life being told she was bitter.”
Alana handed her copies of Vivian’s records.
“I am sorry.”
“You didn’t steal it.”
“My family benefited.”
“So did thousands of patients.”
The answer surprised Alana.
Lena did not want the company destroyed.
She wanted acknowledgment, ownership, and funding for research Samuel had intended to pursue.
They designed a plan.
The company would publicly correct its founding story.
The Reed family would receive voting shares and royalties.
An independent board would protect employees from instability.
Alana would remain chief trustee temporarily.
When Daniel asked whether she was sure, Alana remembered Vivian’s words.
The company is not the greatest inheritance.
“The truth is the inheritance,” Alana said.
That afternoon, prosecutors informed her that Yasmin faced charges for conspiracy, fraud, assault facilitation, unlawful surveillance interference, and attempted coercion.
Mark faced assault and conspiracy charges.
Gillian faced lesser charges but had begun cooperating.
Then investigators discovered the baseball bat contained Mark’s fingerprints and something else.
A small smear of oil matching the substance used on the staircase.
Mark denied applying it.
Yasmin denied touching the bat.
But Gillian remembered seeing someone carry it upstairs days earlier.
A mansion employee.
