Chapter 11 - The Butler Who Chose Money
The oil residue led investigators to Charles Wynn, the mansion’s longtime estate manager.
Charles had worked for Vivian for twenty-two years.
He taught Alana how to ride a bicycle.
He attended her college graduation.
He called her “Miss Alana” even after she asked him to stop.
When questioned, Charles denied everything.
Then investigators found $300,000 inside an account opened under his brother’s name.
The payments came from Yasmin.
Charles broke.
Yasmin had ordered him to loosen security procedures, disable hallway cameras, and apply oil to the staircase.
She promised Alana would suffer only a minor fall.
He believed her.
Or wanted to.
The fire had not been part of his instructions.
That was arranged separately through the former security technician.
Alana listened to Charles’s confession from a hospital conference room.
“Why?” she asked.
His eyes filled.
“My wife needed treatment. Insurance denied it.”
“You could have come to me.”
“I was ashamed.”
“So you helped them hurt me.”
He lowered his head.
“Yes.”
Alana did not promise forgiveness.
She did ensure his wife’s treatment continued through an independent charity fund.
Charles still faced criminal consequences.
Compassion did not require erasing accountability.
The case against Yasmin strengthened.
Mark’s attorney argued that Yasmin manipulated him into violence.
The prosecutor answered simply:
“She did not swing the bat.”
Mark eventually accepted that.
During a recorded interview, he admitted his actions.
“I wanted Alana frightened enough to obey.”
“Did you intend to break her arm?”
“No.”
“Did you understand the bat could cause serious injury?”
“Yes.”
“Then why swing?”
Mark stared at the table.
“Because everyone had always moved when I became angry.”
The confession went public months later.
It destroyed the myth that he had acted accidentally.
Gillian also testified.
She described the threats, the hidden recordings, and her own cowardice.
When asked why she finally transmitted the evidence, she said:
“Grandma told me there would be one moment when I had to decide whether I was my mother’s daughter or my own person.”
Alana watched from the courtroom gallery.
Gillian had chosen late.
But she had chosen.
Then prosecutors revealed Yasmin had maintained a second identity and offshore accounts containing millions stolen from family trusts.
The inheritance plot had never been only about securing Mark’s future.
