Chapter 12 - THE ROOM BELOW

The elevator descended into a small apartment beneath the garage.

Bedroom.

Kitchenette.

Monitoring wall.

One-way audio from every room in the house.

Someone had lived beneath us for years.

The occupant was Grandma Eleanor Miller.

Linda’s mother.

Officially dead twelve years earlier.

She built the hidden apartment after discovering Richard and Thomas using her daughters’ identities.

Why not expose them?

She collected evidence.

Waited.

Controlled the inheritance from below.

Another matriarch who believed private surveillance was protection.

She watched Linda being abused.

Watched me grow.

Watched Rachel enter the garage.

She intervened only when property risked leaving the bloodline.

Her love came tied to ownership too.

Grandma admitted designing the second compartment in the cedar chest.

It held not only birth records.

It held the original Miller Continuity charter.

She and Thomas founded the system together after losing a son in a custody dispute.

They believed family identity should never depend on courts.

So they built their own records.

The system expanded into fraud and trafficking.

Grandma blamed Richard.

Thomas blamed Grandma.

Both built the architecture.

Then Eleanor Ashbourne contacted the hidden apartment screen.

She said the global network would release every private recording unless Grandma transferred the house and company patents.

Grandma refused.

Ashbourne released one clip.

Linda standing over me as a baby, saying:

“I can’t keep both girls.”

My mother collapsed.

The clip made it appear she chose me over Rachel.

The full recording revealed Laura held Rachel nearby and Richard threatened both women.

Edited truth became another weapon.

Then Ashbourne activated a final Continuity operation.

TARGET: LINDA MILLER.

EVENT: MATERNAL CONFESSION.
