Chapter 5 - MY MOTHER’S PHONE

Linda did not lock the garage.

Richard cloned her phone.

But she had received repeated security alerts and ignored them.

She believed they were technical errors.

Or wanted to believe.

The app logs showed the system locked automatically when my phone began recording.

Richard had built a trigger.

Any detected camera inside the garage sealed the exits.

The entire space was designed as an evidence trap.

Linda’s passivity remained part of the danger.

She apologized.

I did not tell her everything was okay.

It was not.

Then Hayes examined the black pickup.

Behind the dashboard, officers found a second camera.

Richard had recorded family confrontations for years.

He collected evidence of Linda crying, me shouting, and Thomas threatening him.

Edited versions could portray him as the victim.

One video showed Linda throwing a glass at him.

It did not show the hour of verbal abuse before it.

Another showed me pushing Richard.

It did not show him gripping my throat first.

He manufactured narratives from reactions.

Then one clip showed Rachel entering our garage at seventeen.

Richard held her against the pickup.

Vanessa watched.

Linda stood by the shelves.

My mother had seen my twin.

She remembered now.

Richard had drugged her afterward.

Blood tests from old medical records showed unexplained sedatives.

Linda’s memory had been chemically damaged.

Her silence had not always been choice.

But when she remembered fragments, she still chose not to investigate.

Both truths.

Then Rachel agreed to meet me.

Public courthouse.

Lawyers.

Police.

No family alone.

She looked like me with shorter hair and harder eyes.

Her first words were:

“You got the mother.”

I answered, “I got a frightened woman who forgot you.”

Neither of us had won.

Then she gave me a photograph.

Richard standing beside a young woman with Linda’s face.

Another twin.

My mother had a sister too.

The woman who signed Rachel’s transfer may not have been Linda.
