Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN IN THE TRUCK

Vanessa Cole was not Richard’s mistress.

She was his biological daughter from a relationship before he married Linda.

Thirty-four years old.

Raised under another surname.

Paid in secret through Miller Construction accounts.

Richard had not been kissing a lover.

He had kissed her forehead and held her while discussing the house.

The camera angle made it look intimate.

The real betrayal was worse.

Vanessa was helping him transfer Linda’s inheritance into a hidden family trust.

A trust designed for Richard’s “firstborn daughter.”

Vanessa.

Not me.

Thomas entered the garage after the door rose fully.

He looked older than the photographs from the funeral, but unmistakable.

Scar across his forehead.

Silver cane.

Same dark eyes as Richard.

He had survived the warehouse fire eighteen years earlier.

Richard declared him dead anyway.

Why?

Thomas had discovered Richard forging construction invoices and using family properties to launder money.

Thomas planned to remove him from the company.

The fire solved the problem.

Or nearly did.

Thomas escaped through a rear loading door and entered federal witness protection after learning local police were compromised.

He returned because Detective Hayes reopened the case through my financial complaint.

The knocks were coordinated.

He was supposed to wait for officers.

He heard me scream and came early.

Richard denied everything.

Then the hidden truck phone played a saved message from Vanessa.

“Dad, Rebecca saw us. The plan is exposed.”

She called him Dad.

Linda sat down hard on the garage step.

Her husband had another daughter.

A hidden trust.

A living father he declared dead.

And a plan to steal her house.

The police arrived.

Richard tried to run through the side yard.

Officers captured him before he reached the fence.

Vanessa vanished.

The key to Grandma’s cedar chest remained in my hand.

Inside the house, Linda unlocked the chest.

A false bottom opened.

Beneath old photographs lay birth certificates.

Mine.

Vanessa’s.

And a third girl.

Name: Rachel Miller.

Date of birth: same as mine.

Twin sister.

Status: deceased.

No death certificate.

Only a transfer form signed by Linda.

My mother stared at the signature.

“I never signed this.”

Thomas looked at the paper.

“Yes, you did.”

“Why?”

“You were sedated.”
