Chapter 15 - The Final Shadow

The live satellite camera feed zoomed in on porch.

It showed Clara and me sitting at the table.

Whoever sent the box was watching us right now.

My heart pounded violently against my chest ribs.

I grabbed Clara's arm, pulling her up fast.

"Get the children inside the house right now, Clara!"

Clara ran inside, locking the kids in bedroom.

I activated our new home security alarm system fast.

Thick steel security shutters lowered over every window frame.

I pulled my licensed firearm from the wall safe.

I stood in the front hallway guarding the entrance.

My mind raced through the terrifying, unthinkable implications.

Our mother was a high-level global syndicate mastermind.

She had spent twenty years building a shadow network.

She sacrificed Chief Harrison to test our tactical strength.

She wanted us to inherit her illegal global empire.

And if we refused her dark offer tonight,

She would eliminate everything we built in this city.

A slow, heavy floorboard creaked on porch outside.

Footsteps approached our heavy front oak entrance door.

Clara pressed her back against the hallway wall trembling.

She held a heavy brass lamp in her hand.

Tears of pure terror streamed down her pale cheeks.

"Rachel... someone is standing outside the front door..."

I stepped in front of Clara and her children.

I raised my firearm, aiming at the lock mechanism.

My finger rested steady on the cold steel trigger.

The heavy brass door handle slowly turned downward now.

The electronic deadbolt lock chimed with a soft.

The keycard reader flashed green on the door frame.

Whoever was outside held a master digital keycard.

The heavy oak front door swung open slowly into.

A tall woman stepped into the dimly lit hallway.

She wore an immaculate, expensive cream silk trench coat.

Her silver hair was styled neatly, her eyes cold.

Her facial features were identical to mine and Clara's.

It was our biological mother, standing right before us.

She did not pull a weapon or run away.

She looked at my raised firearm and smiled warmly.

A chilling, terrifying smile of pure maternal pride.

"Lower the gun, Rachel," our mother whispered softly.

Her voice sounded calm, commanding, and utterly fearless.

"You did exceptionally well defeating Chief Harrison tonight."

"He was weak and reckless with those children."

"I taught you both to be strong, my."

I did not lower the barrel by one inch.

"You used my sister as bait, you monster!"

Our mother took a slow, deliberate step inside room.

"I built this global empire for you two, girls."

"And tonight, the real work begins for us."

She reached into her inner coat pocket slowly now.

I tightened my grip on the curved trigger guard.

She pulled out a heavy black leather document file.

She set the file onto our hallway glass table.

"Inside this folder is the real global blueprint,".

"Chief Harrison was just a minor pawn on board."

"And your partner Detective Miller knows who I am."

I frowned, my eyes darting toward shadows fast.

Standing behind our mother in the dark hallway doorway,

Detective Miller stepped out from the shadows smiling coldly.

He held a weapon trained directly on my chest.

Beside him stood another figure wearing a dark suit.

A figure whose face made my blood run cold.

It was my husband, who vanished five years ago.

He smiled at me, raising his glass in toast.

"Hello, Rachel," my lost husband whispered softly tonight.

"The most shocking part is yet to come. Comment 'yes' so I can drop Part Two immediately!"
