Chapter 2 - The Highway Chase

The ambulance sped through the dark, rain-soaked city.

Emergency sirens wailed loudly against the empty brick buildings.

Inside the vehicle, paramedics worked frantically on little Leo.

An oxygen mask was placed over the toddler's face.

Warm intravenous fluids were injected into his small arm.

I held Lily's cold, trembling hand in my palms.

Her hazel eyes remained fixed on my police badge.

"Officer Rachel, is my brother going to be okay?"

"The doctors will take good care of him, Lily."

I reassured her with a soft, steady, calm voice.

She squeezed my fingers with surprising physical strength today.

"Mom told me to hide under the bed frame."

"She said bad men were coming to take us."

My chest tightened as I listened to her words.

"What kind of bad men, Lily?" I asked.

"Men wearing shiny metal badges like yours," Lily whispered.

Tears welled up in her eyes as she spoke.

"Mom hid a small black drive inside the bedroom wall."

"She told me to give it to a good cop."

My heart pounded violently against my heavy bulletproof vest.

Clara had hidden primary evidence inside Apartment 4B walls.

Evidence exposing high-level law enforcement bribery and extortion schemes.

Suddenly, a loud metallic impact rocked the ambulance body.

A heavy black pickup truck rammed our rear bumper.

The ambulance skidded wildly across the slick wet asphalt.

The paramedic driver yelled out in sudden, sheer panic.

"We are being chased by an unmarked black truck!"

I looked through the small glass window behind us.

Two masked men in tactical gear pointed weapons at us.

They fired three suppressed shots through our back window.

Glass shattered into thousands of tiny, sharp flying pieces.

I pushed Lily down onto the metal floorboard fast.

"Stay down and cover your head, Lily!" I.

I drew my heavy Glock pistol from my holster.

I returned fire through the shattered rear window frame.

My bullet struck the pickup truck's front left tire.

The truck swerved violently off the slippery wet road.

It crashed hard into a concrete highway divider wall.

Blinding sparks flew high into the dark night sky.

Our driver slammed his foot onto the accelerator pedal.

We pulled into the brightly lit hospital emergency entrance.

Medical trauma teams rushed out with rolling gurney beds.

They took little Leo into the emergency trauma room.

I carried Lily through the automatic glass sliding doors.

Chief Arthur Harrison stood waiting inside the hospital lobby.

He wore his formal police uniform with gold stars.

Beside him stood Landlord Vance wearing an expensive coat.

Chief Harrison looked at me with cold, lethal eyes.
