Chapter 3 - The Hospital Standoff

Chief Harrison stepped forward, reaching his hand out firmly.
"I am taking charge of these minors right now."
I planted my feet firmly onto the polished floor.
"You have no legal authority here tonight, Chief Harrison."
"These children are key witnesses in an abduction case."
Landlord Vance pulled a folded white paper from coat.
He wore a smug, arrogant grin on his face.
"I hold temporary emergency custody papers signed by Judge."
"Their mother abandoned them, making me their legal guardian."
I stared at Landlord Vance with absolute, icy contempt.
"You locked their apartment backdoor from outside last night."
"I saw the padlocks on the frame myself, Vance."
Chief Harrison's face flushed a deep, angry crimson shade.
"Watch your mouth, Officer Brooks!" Chief Harrison barked.
"You are speaking to a prominent city real investor!"
"Surrender the girl or hand over your badge now!"
A female nurse named Nora stepped out from trauma.
Nora was a longtime friend who worked trauma cases.
She saw the heavy tension between officers in lobby.
She stepped between Chief Harrison and my protective body.
"This child needs immediate medical evaluation for hypothermia, Chief."
"No officer enters trauma care without a signed warrant."
Chief Harrison's eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury.
"You are interfering with an active police operation, nurse!"
"I will close this hospital department down by morning!"
Nurse Nora did not flinch or back away once.
"Try it, Chief," Nora replied with lethal calm.
"The hospital board has direct federal reporting clearance lines."
She grabbed Lily's hand, leading her into trauma room.
The heavy double doors swung shut, locking automatically inside.
Chief Harrison leaned in close to my pale face.
His breath smelled stale, heavy with cheap whiskey fumes.
"You are playing a dangerous game, Rachel," he.
"Your sister Clara thought she was clever too."
My heart froze as his words hit my chest.
"Clara... Clara is my long-lost sister?" I.
Chief Harrison let out a low, sinister, chilling laugh.
"She didn't tell you when she moved here?"
"She came to city to find her heroic officer sister."
"And now she is sitting in my cellar room."
Pure, unadulterated, boiling rage erupted inside my entire soul.
My missing sister Clara was being held hostage somewhere.
Chief Harrison had orchestrated her disappearance to get evidence.
"Where is my sister, Harrison?" I growled loudly.
"Surrender Clara's black drive, or she dies tonight."
Chief Harrison whispered, turning away toward the exit doors.
Landlord Vance followed him out into the heavy rain.
I realized I had to return to Apartment 4B.
