Chapter 6 - The Traitor's Call

I pressed the Bluetooth button on my steering wheel.

Detective Miller's voice came through the car speakers clearly.

"Rachel! Where are you? Dispatch reported shots fired 4B!"

"I am fine, Miller," I replied carefully while driving.

"I found Landlord Vance inside Clara's apartment just now."

"Did you find the evidence Clara hid there, Rachel?"

Miller asked, his tone sounding slightly too eager now.

My sharp instincts immediately flagged his suspicious tone.

I had not told Miller about any hidden evidence.

"How did you know Clara hid evidence there, Miller?"

The phone line went quiet for three long seconds.

Only the sound of rain hitting windshield filled car.

"Chief Harrison told the precinct about her files," Miller.

"He claims Clara is a rogue cyber criminal operative."

"He wants us to secure her drive for security."

I knew right then that Miller was lying to.

Miller was working for Chief Harrison the entire time.

My trusted partner of five years was a traitor.

"I didn't find any drive, Miller," I lied.

"The apartment was completely cleared out before I arrived."

"Where are you heading right now, Rachel?" Miller.

"I am driving back to hospital to check kids."

I said, turning the steering wheel toward city docks.

"Good, stay at the hospital until backup arrives, Rachel."

"We will handle the apartment crime scene investigation now."

Miller ended the call, believing my fake cover story.

I let out a long, heavy breath of betrayal.

Money had corrupted every single level of my department.

I was completely alone in this fight for justice.

I opened Clara's leather diary on passenger seat side.

I scanned through the handwritten names listed inside pages.

The mayor, the judge, and my partner were listed.

They had all taken cash bribes from Harrison's network.

In exchange, they turned a blind eye to trafficking.

Clara had uncovered the entire shadow network three months.

When she tried to go public, they targeted her.

They poisoned little Leo to force her out hiding.

They knew she would leave her hideout for medicine.

That was why she had the prescription paper tonight.

She fell right into Chief Harrison's calculated trap.

I slammed my hand against the leather steering wheel.

Tears of rage burned hot against my cold cheeks.

"I am coming for you, Clara," I whispered.
