Chapter 6 - The Opening Doors
The sound of metal ratcheting tight filled the room.
Victoria was forced onto her feet by two deputies.
Her manicured nails dug into the deputy's sleeve fabric.
"Mara, tell them to stop!" Victoria begged wildly now.
"I raised you after your mother passed away years!"
"You owe me your life, you ungrateful girl!"
I looked at her with complete, unyielding emotional coldness.
"You didn't raise me, Victoria," I replied softly.
"You locked me in the attic during summer breaks."
"You stole my mother's jewelry and sold it off."
"And you tried to erase my entire military service."
Victoria sneered, spitting toward my dress uniform shoes today.
"You are just like your weak father!" she roared.
"He gave up everything for his precious military honor!"
Deputy Davis forced her arms higher behind her back.
"Keep moving, ma'am," Deputy Davis commanded very sternly.
They dragged Victoria down the central carpet aisle floor.
Press photographers crowded around her, flashing bright bulbs continuously.
Her panicked, messy face was captured for evening news.
The news headline would read across the nation tonight:
"Prominent Socialite Arrested For Military Fraud And Murder."
General Vance walked over to my prosecution table side.
He rested a large, warm hand on my shoulder.
"You held your ground exceptionally well, Commander Bennett."
"Your father would be immensely proud of you today."
Tears finally welled up in my hazel eyes now.
I wiped a single tear from my cheek quickly.
"Thank you, General," I whispered with deep emotion.
"I could not have done this without your support."
"The battle is not over yet, Mara," Vance warned.
He leaned in close, lowering his voice to whisper.
"We found the buyer who bought your father's files."
"The buyer is someone inside your own military unit."
