Chapter 10 - Claire Bennett
Police found Claire at a motel outside the city.
My goal was to learn whether she had abandoned Ethan willingly.
She cried when detectives mentioned him.
Then she admitted the truth.
After Michael died, Linda approached her.
She promised financial security if Claire allowed the Carter family to “protect” the baby.
Claire refused.
Then Dr. Cole told her the child had a serious genetic heart condition.
He said Ethan needed lifelong specialist care.
Claire had no money.
She signed temporary guardianship.
It became permanent without her knowledge.
Later, Linda paid her monthly.
Claire told herself the money was support.
In reality, it bought silence.
Six months ago, Dr. Cole contacted her again.
He said Noah had the same “condition.”
He wanted Claire to sign a statement claiming Carter-family cardiac disease was hereditary through Michael’s line.
That statement would help move Noah under the trust.
Claire agreed.
That was her betrayal.
She knew she was helping manipulate another mother.
She did not know Noah was being drugged.
Then she showed police the draft she refused to sign in the end.
It declared me mentally unstable and dangerous to Noah.
Dr. Cole wanted Claire to claim I had discussed “sedating the baby.”
Claire refused that paragraph.
Linda threatened to stop payments.
Claire disappeared instead.
That explained why the plan accelerated.
They lost a witness.
Then Claire gave us the strongest evidence yet.
A recorded call with Linda.
Linda:
“If Emily keeps fighting, Ryan will choose his family.”
Claire:
“He is her family.”
Linda:
“No. He’s mine first.”
That sentence captured everything.
Linda did not see Ryan as an adult.
She saw him as an asset.
Then Claire asked:
“And if Ryan refuses?”
Linda answered:
“Nathan has the papers to remove him too.”
Ryan went white when he heard it.
The conspiracy had a guardianship plan for him as well.
