Chapter 11 - Ryan’s File

The file included audio from our bedroom.

My goal was to find who recorded us.

Ryan arguing with me.

Ryan crying after his father died.

Ryan admitting panic attacks.

Ryan saying, “Sometimes I feel like I’m losing control.”

Taken out of context, it sounded dangerous.

In context, it was grief.

The recordings came from our home assistant system.

Linda had administrator access.

Ryan gave it to her years ago “for emergencies.”

Every weakness became evidence.

Then we found a draft petition.

Petitioner: Linda Carter.

Subject: Ryan Carter.

Reason: emotional instability, financial recklessness, impaired judgment.

If Ryan resisted, Linda could try to seize his corporate voting rights and Noah’s custody through him.

He sat beside me.

“I didn’t know.”

I looked at him.

“You didn’t want to know.”

That was his punishment.

For years he dismissed every concern I raised because it was easier than confronting his mother.

He had not designed the poisoning.

But his denial helped create the space for it.

Then the file contained one audio clip different from the others.

A conversation between Linda and Dr. Cole.

Nathan:

“Ryan is becoming difficult.”

Linda:

“He’ll fold when Emily does.”

Nathan:

“And if she doesn’t?”

Linda:

“Emma will.”

Emma.

My blood ran cold.

They had planned to use her too.

The next page showed an unsigned statement written in a childlike style:

Mom gives Noah medicine when Dad isn’t home.

They intended to forge Emma’s words.

But why involve her directly?

Because a sibling witness would be powerful.

Then Emma told us something she had been too afraid to say.

Linda had asked her to memorize a sentence.

“If anyone asks, say Mommy put drops in the bottle.”

Emma refused.

That was why Linda struck her at the clinic.

Not because of the medicine bottle.

Because Emma had already broken the script.

Then Emma opened the back seam of her teddy bear.

Inside was another object.

A tiny memory card.

“I took this too.”

From Linda’s house.

I thought the bottle was Emma’s only evidence—but she had stolen Linda’s hidden camera card as well.

The video on it showed the night Margaret Hale died.
