Chapter 13 - Thomas Carter

Police traced the trustee account.

Thomas Carter had been alive under the name Thomas Gray.

My goal was to find him before Linda did.

Federal agents located him at a private assisted-living residence.

He was seventy.

Weak from a stroke.

But mentally clear.

Ryan entered the room alone first.

I watched through the glass.

He cried.

Thomas did not.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Not enough.

Thomas admitted faking his death after discovering Linda and Dr. Cole had manipulated Michael’s trust.

But he was not innocent.

He created the trust structure.

He believed family assets should remain “inside the bloodline.”

He encouraged Michael to father an heir.

He pressured Claire.

He let Linda manage the details.

Then Michael died.

Thomas realized the system had become criminal.

He tried to dismantle it.

Linda threatened to expose tax fraud and financial misconduct Thomas had committed.

So he disappeared.

Again, cowardice disguised as strategy.

“Why didn’t you warn Ryan?”

“I thought distance protected him.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite excuse.”

Thomas handed investigators a key.

A private vault.

Inside were original trust papers and video statements.

One statement was Michael’s.

Recorded two days before his death.

Michael said:

“If something happens to me, Mom knows more than she admits, but Dad built the machine.”

Thomas closed his eyes when he heard it.

Then another statement appeared.

Dr. Cole speaking with Thomas.

Nathan:

“You want control without blood on your hands.”

Thomas:

“I want no child harmed.”

Nathan:

“Then you should have written a better trust.”

That was the reward.

Thomas did not order the poisonings.

But his obsession with bloodline control created the incentive.

Then the vault revealed the legal deadline.

The Carter manufacturing trust would transfer permanently in fourteen days.

If Ethan was proven Michael’s son, Ethan inherited.

If Ethan was medically incapacitated, his guardian controlled it.

If Ethan’s claim failed, Noah became the backup candidate through the forged Michael-paternity route.

Linda’s plan was approaching its final deadline.

Then Thomas revealed one more thing.

“There is no backup candidate.”

“What?”

“The second DNA file is fake.”

“Which one?”

“Noah’s.”

I thought they wanted Noah as a substitute heir—but Thomas said Noah had never been intended to inherit at all.

He was leverage to force Ryan to surrender control of the company.

The true target was not Noah.

It was Ryan’s signature.
