Chapter 7 - Michael’s Accident

Michael’s death had been ruled accidental.

My goal was to determine why a headstone existed before the crash.

The cemetery owner found the purchase record.

Linda paid for the plot and stone seven months before Michael died.

She claimed Michael had been terminally ill.

Ryan stared at her.

“He wasn’t sick.”

Linda said he had a hereditary condition.

No medical evidence supported that.

Then the crash file revealed something else.

Michael’s brakes failed.

The mechanic who serviced the car had died two years later.

But his handwritten notes survived.

Customer complained vehicle pulled left after service. Mother requested no further inspection.

Mother.

Linda.

Ryan looked sick.

“You took his car?”

Linda said, “I was trying to help.”

Police found Dr. Cole’s name in the insurance paperwork.

He certified Michael medically fit to drive.

Then he certified his death.

The same doctor touched every critical point.

But the strongest evidence was Michael’s old voicemail archive.

One message to Ryan had never been delivered.

“Ryan, Mom knows about the trust. Don’t sign anything she gives you.”

Timestamp: three hours before the crash.

Ryan closed his eyes.

He had never heard it.

Someone deleted it from the family phone account.

Account administrator: Linda.

For the first time, Ryan stopped defending her.

That was his reward.

Too late for me to trust him.

But finally he saw her.

Then Michael’s personal storage unit was opened.

Inside were letters from a woman named Claire Bennett.

She wrote that she was pregnant.

Michael wrote back that he would “claim the baby after the trust was secured.”

The final letter was dated one week before Michael died.

Claire wrote:

I changed my mind. This child will not be used for your family money.

No later correspondence existed.

Police searched birth records.

Claire Bennett delivered a boy seven months after Michael died.

The child’s birth certificate was sealed.

I thought Noah was the child Linda wanted to tie to Michael—but Michael had actually fathered another son.

The identity of that boy made Ryan collapse in his chair.
