Chapter 6 - The Man Named Daniel Hale

The sealed petition identified Daniel Hale.

Age thirty-eight.

Margaret’s son.

My goal was to find out why someone wanted him connected to Noah.

Daniel worked in another state.

Police located him quickly.

He had never met me.

Never met Ryan.

Never met Noah.

He was horrified when investigators showed him the paternity file.

“That isn’t my DNA.”

Fresh testing confirmed it.

He was not Noah’s father.

The sample labeled Daniel Hale belonged to someone else.

Another switched identity.

This conspiracy was not trying to prove truth.

It was creating interchangeable fathers.

Each sample opened a different legal path.

Daniel revealed his mother had become paranoid before she died.

She believed Linda was stealing mail.

She believed Dr. Cole was “checking her blood for someone else.”

Her family dismissed it.

Then Daniel gave police Margaret’s final voicemail.

Her voice was weak.

“Daniel, Linda keeps asking about Thomas Carter’s trust. She says a baby will change everything.”

A baby.

Noah had not been born yet.

Linda knew a baby was coming.

That was not surprising.

She knew I was pregnant.

But Margaret continued:

“She says Ryan cannot be allowed to remain the father on paper.”

That sentence changed the room.

Linda had planned to legally remove Ryan as father before Noah’s birth.

Why would a mother destroy her own son’s paternity?

Because she was protecting something larger than Ryan.

Daniel handed over another item.

A photograph Margaret mailed him before her death.

Linda stood beside Dr. Cole at a family cemetery.

Between them was a headstone.

MICHAEL CARTER.

But the date on the photograph was six months before Michael’s supposed death.

The headstone already existed.

I thought Michael died in a sudden accident—but the photograph suggested his death had been planned.

The police reopened Michael Carter’s crash.
