Chapter 9 - Ethan

Ethan was removed from Dr. Cole’s custody within hours.

My goal was to get him safe and find Dr. Cole.

He was thin.

Quiet.

Too mature for eight.

His blood showed chronic low-dose digoxin exposure.

Not enough to kill him.

Enough to make him weak.

Enough to create medical dependency.

Exactly what the trust required.

He asked police one question.

“Is Grandma Linda mad at me?”

Grandma.

Linda had told him she was his grandmother.

That part was biologically true.

But she had also told him Dr. Cole was his father.

A lie.

Ethan said Dr. Cole gave him “heart vitamins.”

Linda visited every Sunday.

Sometimes Ryan visited too.

Ryan looked stunned.

“I never met him.”

Ethan described a man in a gray plaid shirt who came to the house twice.

Same shirt Ryan wore often.

But security footage from Dr. Cole’s neighborhood showed someone else.

Similar build.

Similar clothing.

Face hidden.

The man used Ryan’s car.

Someone had been impersonating him.

Then police checked vehicle access logs.

Linda had a spare key.

Again.

She had been manufacturing Ryan’s presence around Ethan just as she manufactured my identity at the pharmacy.

Every person in the family could be inserted into evidence when needed.

Then Ethan remembered Dr. Cole kept “Grandma’s red folder” inside a locked safe.

Police opened it.

Inside were trust documents, DNA kits, prescription labels, and one handwritten plan.

PHASE 1 — Ethan.

PHASE 2 — Noah.

PHASE 3 — Remove mothers.

Mothers.

Plural.

Claire Bennett.

Me.

The plan had always included removing the mothers after the children became legally useful.

Then a photograph fell from the folder.

Claire Bennett was alive.

She stood beside Dr. Cole six months earlier.

She was not imprisoned.

She was smiling.

I thought Claire was another victim—but the photograph suggested she had remained connected to the plan for years.

The message written on the back made it worse:

Claire agrees to final transfer if Emily becomes unstable.
