Chapter 24 - UNCLE DAVID

David Carter invited us to his office.
He did not run.
That frightened me more.
He was sixty-two.
Silver hair.
Simple suit.
A man who had spent his life standing slightly outside family photographs.
Ryan sat across from him.
“Did you give Pierce the documents?”
David answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To recover Michael’s money.”
“You triggered the trust dispute.”
“I needed the reserve account unfrozen.”
“You used Emma, Ethan, and Lucas.”
David looked at me.
“I used legal filings. No child was harmed.”
I felt heat rise through me.
“That sentence belongs in your family.”
He did not react.
David had always resented Thomas.
Thomas inherited the company.
Thomas wrote the trust.
Thomas controlled the board.
David became security chief and remained beneath his older brother for thirty years.
When Michael tried to dismantle the trust, David secretly helped him.
After Michael died, David preserved the offshore money.
That sounded almost noble.
Then the prosecutor asked about Margaret.
David’s face changed.
He had called to warn her Linda and Cole were coming.
Margaret refused to leave.
“Why didn’t you call police?”
“Because the account would have been exposed.”
There it was.
Again.
Money before people.
He did not poison Margaret.
He did not sabotage Michael’s brakes.
But he knew enough to intervene.
He chose the plan instead.
The Carter men had different excuses.
Thomas called it legacy.
Ryan called it fear.
David called it strategy.
Michael had been the only one who tried to burn the system down.
David claimed the twelve million belonged to the descendants collectively.
He wanted to create an independent fund for Emma, Ethan, Lucas, and Noah.
“Noah is not connected to Michael’s trust,” I said.
“He is connected to the family.”
“Then ask us.”
David looked irritated.
“Children do not understand long-term wealth.”
“Neither do adults who poison them.”
Ryan turned to his uncle.
“You don’t get to replace Linda just because you use softer words.”
Federal agents arrested David for fraud, obstruction, unauthorized access, and conspiracy with Pierce.
Before they removed him, he told Ryan one thing.
“Michael didn’t die in that car because of Linda.”
Ryan froze.
The investigation had always assumed the brake sabotage caused the crash.
David claimed the brakes had been restored before Michael drove.
The fatal accident happened because Michael lost consciousness behind the wheel.
Toxicology had never found alcohol.
No recreational drugs.
But the preserved blood sample had never been tested for digoxin.
Dr. Sterling ordered a new analysis.
Nine years after Michael’s death, the result came back positive.
Low level.
Enough to trigger dangerous arrhythmia under stress.
Ryan stared at the report.
“Cole poisoned him too.”
Cole denied it.
Linda denied ordering it.
Then the original pharmacy audit revealed a prescription filled two days before Michael’s crash.
Patient:
Thomas Carter.
Medication:
Digoxin.

David Carter.
📖 Michael’s death had never been only a brake plot—the same drug used on Margaret, Ethan, and Noah had been in his blood, and Uncle David had picked up the prescription days before the crash. 👇
