Chapter 19 - THOMAS’S SECOND LIE
Thomas did not deny the payments.
He was under house arrest in a federal medical residence when we confronted him.
Stroke had weakened one side of his body.
Not his ability to calculate.
“I monitored them for protection.”
Ryan laughed.
The sound had no humor.
“That’s what everyone in this family calls control.”
Thomas looked at me.
“After Linda was arrested, I needed to know whether anyone from the old trust structure approached the children.”
“Then why not tell investigators?”
“Because I didn’t trust them.”
“You trusted a private surveillance company?”
“I knew who owned it.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Who?”
Thomas hesitated.
That was enough.
He had hidden another person.
The surveillance company belonged to Michael Carter.
At least on paper.
Michael had formed it eleven years earlier.
Before his death.
Thomas explained that Michael discovered Linda was manipulating the trust and created a private records system to document every contact she made with potential heirs.
After Michael died, Thomas kept the company active.
He used it first to protect himself.
Later, he told himself he was protecting the children.
“Did you watch Emma?” Ryan asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you know she was Michael’s?”
Thomas looked away.
Ryan’s face changed.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You let me raise my brother’s daughter without telling me.”
“I believed changing her life would harm her.”
“No. You believed truth would complicate the trust.”
Thomas did not answer.
That silence was confession.
Then I asked the question that had been sitting beneath everything.
“Who wrote ‘Linda knows. Do not tell Ryan’?”
Thomas looked at me.
“Michael.”
The note was Michael’s instruction to Dr. Cole during Emma’s newborn test.
Michael knew Linda had discovered the pregnancy.
He asked Cole not to tell Ryan because he still believed he could protect Jessica and Emma before Linda seized control.
Cole betrayed him.
Thomas gave investigators access to Michael’s surveillance archive.
Inside were recordings we had never seen.
One showed Michael meeting Jessica.
One showed Linda following Olivia.
One showed Dr. Cole collecting Ethan’s blood.
Then a final clip appeared.
The night before Michael’s crash.
Michael entered Thomas’s office.
He was angry.
“You have three grandchildren hidden inside this mess.”
Thomas answered, “I know.”
Michael slammed both hands on the desk.
“Then end the trust.”
Thomas refused.
He said the company would fracture without bloodline control.
Michael said something that made Ryan stop breathing.
“Ryan’s son has nothing to do with your company.”
Thomas replied:
“He will if you are gone.”
Michael understood.
If Michael died, Ethan and Emma became potential trust heirs.
If their claims could be manipulated, Lucas—Ryan’s biological son—became another leverage point against Ryan’s branch.
Thomas had not ordered Michael’s death.
But he had designed a system where Michael’s death made several people richer.
Then the surveillance archive revealed one file marked NOT RELEASED.
Michael had recorded his brakes being inspected the morning of the crash.
The mechanic was not alone.
Linda stood beside him.
