Chapter 21 - THE CLAIMS LINDA NEEDED

Linda’s prison calls became the first place investigators looked.

She had spoken with attorneys.

Reporters.

A prison chaplain.

No known criminal associates.

Then Ryan noticed one number.

The manufacturing company’s former general counsel.

Harold Pierce.

Pierce had retired after the first scandal and testified that he knew nothing about Linda’s scheme.

That had always bothered me.

A man who drafted trust amendments for twenty years knew nothing?

Federal agents searched his office.

They found copies of Lucas’s adoption documents.

Not the stolen originals.

Copies prepared before the break-in.

Pierce had been building three competing heir petitions:

Emma as Michael’s daughter.

Ethan as Michael’s son.

Lucas as Ryan’s son and alternative branch heir.

The petitions were designed to trigger the reversion clause.

If filed together, Linda would become executor pending judicial review.

Not owner.

Not permanently.

But temporary control could move money, destroy records, and pressure witnesses.

The trust had been dissolved during the criminal case.

Pierce’s plan relied on arguing the dissolution was invalid because the court had not known Emma and Lucas existed.

It was clever.

Not necessarily successful.

But dangerous enough to freeze assets for months.

“Why now?” I asked.

The answer arrived through Linda herself.

She requested to speak with Ryan.

He almost refused.

Then Emma said:

“I want to know why Grandma knew.”

Ryan agreed to the meeting.

Not with Emma.

Never with Emma.

He went alone while investigators recorded.

Linda entered the prison interview room looking smaller than I remembered.

She smiled at Ryan.

“You found Jessica.”

Ryan said nothing.

“You always were slow when emotion got involved.”

He kept his voice flat.

“Did you know Emma was Michael’s?”

“Yes.”

“From birth?”

“Yes.”

“Why give her to me?”

“Because you loved easily.”

Ryan flinched.

Linda continued.

“Michael was becoming impossible. Jessica was unstable. Emma needed a father.”

“You made Jessica look unstable.”

“I made a decision.”

“You stole her child.”

“I protected the family.”

Ryan laughed once.

“No. You protected a trust.”

Linda’s expression sharpened.

“A trust built everything you have.”

“It nearly killed my son.”

Her eyes shifted.

“Noah was never supposed to die.”

“Do you hear yourself?”

Then Ryan asked the question investigators wanted.

“Did you send Pierce after Lucas?”

Linda leaned back.

“I don’t need to send anyone. People know where power will return.”

Not a confession.

But close.

Ryan stood.

Linda called after him.

“Emma will inherit whether you like it or not.”

He turned.

“No.”

Linda smiled.

“The law decides that.”

“No. Emma decides whether she wants anything to do with your money.”

The smile disappeared.

That was the first moment Linda understood the old mechanism might truly be dead.

The children did not want what she controlled.

Pierce was arrested on fraud, obstruction, and burglary-conspiracy charges after phone records connected him to the break-in crew.

But one original adoption document remained missing.

The missing page contained Lucas’s sealed biological acknowledgment.

Without it, Ryan’s parentage could be challenged.

Then Olivia called.

She had found something in her old storage box.

A hospital bracelet.

Lucas Grant.

And a handwritten message from Michael.

RYAN MUST KNOW BEFORE THOMAS USES HIM TOO.

Michael had known about Lucas.

He had been trying to tell Ryan about all three children before the crash.

📖 Michael’s final secret was not another scheme—he had been trying to expose the entire bloodline system before Linda and Thomas could use Ryan’s own son against him. 👇
