Chapter 11 - Eighteen Minutes

Red emergency lights replaced the ballroom’s warm glow.

A countdown appeared on every screen.

18:00.

17:59.

17:58.

Arthur stood beneath it.

“If Trident reaches full charge, Eleanor cannot remove the archive without losing the facility.”

Admiral Thorne grabbed him by the lapel.

“You activated an illegal weapon beneath civilians.”

“It is leverage.”

“It is insanity.”

Arthur looked at me.

“Your mother will come for the key.”

“You risked hundreds of lives to bait her.”

“You came here with a false drive rumor.”

“I risked myself.”

Arthur’s eyes hardened.

“Leadership requires unpleasant calculations.”

“No. Cowards call other people’s lives calculations.”

The tactical team moved into the service tunnel.

I followed with Thorne, Audrey, and Arthur under guard.

The passage descended beneath the club.

Moisture covered the concrete walls.

The vibration grew stronger with every step.

At a security junction, the lights failed.

Gunfire erupted ahead.

Eleanor’s mercenaries had entered through the ocean tunnel.

Navy officers returned fire.

Arthur pulled Audrey behind a steel support.

He protected her instinctively.

Not me.

That old wound barely registered now.

I crawled toward a wounded lieutenant and dragged him behind cover.

A bullet struck the wall where my head had been.

Audrey stared at me.

“You didn’t hesitate.”

“That’s what sailors do.”

The firing stopped.

Two mercenaries surrendered.

One carried a detonator linked to the hostage room.

The display showed a dead-man switch.

If his pulse stopped, the charges would explode.

We restrained him without killing him.

Time remaining:

12:41.

Arthur led us to the central control chamber.

The doors required his biometric scan.

He placed his palm against the glass.

Access denied.

A message appeared.

PRIMARY AUTHORITY REVOKED.

Eleanor had removed him from the system.

Arthur looked genuinely shaken.

“She can’t do that.”

“She already did,” I said.

Audrey found a maintenance terminal.

Its recent access log showed a second authorized user had entered the control chamber ten minutes earlier.

Not Eleanor.

Rear Admiral Peter Vale.

He had escaped the yacht before security secured the lower deck.

The man arrested aboard Legacy was a surgically altered double.

📖 The real Peter Vale was inside the weapon facility, and the countdown was not leading to activation—it was covering his attempt to steal Trident. 👇
