Chapter 7 - The Mother Who Wasn’t Dead

Arthur closed his eyes.
That was enough.
Eleanor Vance was alive.
The official story said she died in a private plane crash off the coast of Maine.
No body was recovered.
Arthur held a funeral.
Audrey and I grew up believing the ocean had taken her.
In reality, Eleanor disappeared after federal investigators linked her to illegal weapons exports.
Arthur used political connections to erase her identity and declare her dead.
She rebuilt herself overseas under the name Eleanor Ward.
“She has been advising Vance Maritime for years,” Audrey said.
Arthur turned on her.
“Be quiet.”
“You sacrificed me first.”
Audrey’s voice cracked.
“You made me handle her payments. You made me speak to her.”
I understood then why Audrey had always treated me like an outsider.
She had remained connected to our mother.
I had not.
Eleanor convinced Audrey that I was the favored daughter.
That my Navy career threatened the family.
That my loyalty to the service was betrayal.
“Where is she?” Admiral Thorne asked.
Audrey shook her head.
“She changes locations.”
Arthur remained silent.
Commander Ellis displayed satellite phone records from the yacht.
Most calls routed through Iceland, Singapore, and Cyprus.
One number connected repeatedly to a private medical facility in Switzerland.
The facility specialized in experimental trauma recovery and identity reconstruction.
A recent patient registry listed Eleanor Ward.
Admiral Thorne ordered international authorities contacted.
Arthur stepped toward me.
“You do not understand your mother.”
“She tried to have me declared insane and murdered.”
“She believes the company protects national security.”
“She protects herself.”
His anger rose.
“You think the Navy is clean? Governments use men like me when they need weapons built without questions.”
“You built weapons that killed our sailors.”
“I built the fleet that kept thousands alive.”
There it was.
His justification.
Every death became acceptable when measured against his legacy.
A Navy investigator approached Commander Ellis with a newly recovered file.
It contained video captured aboard Legacy three months earlier.
Eleanor appeared on screen.
Older, silver-blonde, elegant, unmistakably my mother.
She addressed Arthur directly.
“If Clarissa returns, she must not reach the gala. Audrey will handle the public fracture. You will handle the private end.”
The video paused.
Every guest turned toward Arthur.
He had been ordered to kill me.
May you like
And he had attended the gala knowing I might appear.
📖 Arthur insisted he never intended to follow Eleanor’s order, but investigators discovered he had brought the exact poison named in the Clarissa protocol. 👇
