Chapter 20 - Audrey’s Voice

Arthur sat before the retinal scanner under armed guard.

Audrey stood at the voice terminal.

I remained beside her.

The Hamilton was seven minutes from entering allied missile range.

Arthur completed his scan.

The system accepted it.

A prompt appeared:

SECONDARY AUTHORITY PHRASE.

Only Eleanor knew the words.

Audrey closed her eyes.

“She used to say it before every sailing trip.”

“What?”

“Family commands the sea.”

She spoke in Eleanor’s exact cadence.

The system hesitated.

AUTHORIZATION PARTIAL.

Audrey tried again.

No.

Arthur said, “She changed the phrase after Clarissa joined the Navy.”

Audrey looked at me with sudden understanding.

Eleanor would choose something cruel.

Something directed at me.

I remembered the last birthday card she sent before her supposed death.

The sea keeps only the strong.

Audrey repeated it in our mother’s voice.

AUTHORIZATION ACCEPTED.

The original chip connected to the uplink.

On the North Atlantic feed, the Hamilton’s missiles paused.

A shutdown command transmitted.

Then the system displayed two targets.

DESTROYER CONTROL

MERIDIAN ARCHIVE

The network required one sacrifice.

Stop the ship and preserve Meridian’s evidence.

Or destroy the archive and permanently disable every copy.

Arthur urged us to destroy the archive.

“Save the fleet.”

I saw what he was doing.

If we erased Meridian, his crimes disappeared with it.

The Hamilton could still be saved manually if its crew reached the physical module.

But they had less than three minutes.

I opened a channel to Captain Mercer.

“Can your engineers reach the weapons bus?”

“We lost two men trying.”

More sailors would die.

Audrey looked at me.

“What do we do?”

I hated the choice.

Justice against immediate lives.

Evidence against sailors trapped aboard a weaponized ship.

I selected DESTROYER CONTROL.

The shutdown pulse transmitted.

Hamilton’s systems returned.

Its missiles disarmed.

The fleet was safe.

Meridian’s archive remained intact.

Arthur stared at me.

“You risked losing both.”

“No. I trusted sailors to hold long enough for us to act.”

Audrey sank into a chair.

She had saved hundreds of lives.

Then federal agents placed her in handcuffs.

She did not resist.

Before they led her away, she looked at my scars.

“I’m sorry I tore your blouse.”

“You’re sorry for more than that.”

“Yes.”

The legal battle was only beginning.

📖 Audrey had finally chosen courage, but her trial would force Clarissa to decide whether to testify against her own sister. 👇
