Chapter 25 - Northstar

Eleanor stood before a wall of maritime displays.
The sixth cargo ship was twenty-seven miles from Boston.
Its crew had been locked below deck.
Autonomous controls guided it toward the harbor.
I wore body armor over my uniform.
A tactical team held the corridor.
Eleanor’s remaining guards had surrendered or fallen.
Only she remained beside the control console.
“You could have ruled all of this,” she said.
“People are not ruled.”
“They always are.”
She placed her hand over a red control panel.
“If I release it, the dispersal system opens.”
“If you keep your hand there, snipers will fire.”
“Then pressure releases automatically.”
She had built another dead-man switch.
I moved closer.
“You chose Audrey because she wanted your love.”
“She wanted approval. Love is a child’s word.”
“You chose Arthur because he wanted greatness.”
“He wanted applause.”
“And me?”
“You wanted purpose.”
She smiled almost tenderly.
“That made you the dangerous one.”
I saw the truth.
She did not hate me because I failed her.
She hated me because I could not be owned.
The ship reached twenty miles.
Navy engineers aboard a helicopter attempted to access its upper deck.
Automated gun systems fired.
They pulled back.
Eleanor offered the shutdown code in exchange for immunity.
“No.”
“You will sacrifice a city for principle?”
“No. I will trust the people you underestimated.”
I had already sent Audrey’s voice profile to the vessel’s legacy authorization system.
The cargo network used the same cadence architecture as Trident.
Audrey recorded the necessary phrases from prison.
But the final command required Eleanor’s live stress response.
I needed her to speak specific words.
“You never loved either of us,” I said.
Her face changed.
“I created you.”
“You created bodies. We created ourselves.”
“You are nothing without the Vance name.”
There it was.
The system captured her voice.
The phrase matched the override sequence.
Our engineers transmitted the shutdown.
On the display, the vessel slowed.
Pressure dropped.
Boston Harbor was safe.
Eleanor realized what I had done.
She lifted her hand from the panel.
Nothing happened.
The dead-man switch had been disabled.
Tactical officers restrained her.
As they led her away, she looked back.
“You will become me.”
May you like
“No,” I said. “I know what you look like.”
📖 Eleanor’s final weapon was stopped, but her trial would reveal how many governments had protected Meridian for decades. 👇
