Chapter 15 - The Sister Who Finally Chose
“Audrey,” I said. “Your birthday.”
She stared at me.
Arthur’s blood covered her hands.
“Enter it.”
Her fingers shook over the remote.
Eleanor laughed.
“You think Clarissa will forgive you?”
“This isn’t about forgiveness,” Audrey said.
She entered the date.
The remote unlocked.
Two options appeared:
CORE SHUTDOWN
ARCHIVE PURGE
Eleanor shouted, “Purge it!”
Audrey looked at me.
I understood the choice.
Shutting down the weapon would preserve Meridian’s archive.
Purging the archive would destroy the evidence and perhaps stabilize the core automatically.
Arthur whispered, “Save the company.”
Even wounded, he chose the corporation.
I said, “Shut down the core.”
Audrey pressed the button.
The timer stopped at three seconds.
The glow faded.
Everyone remained still, listening to the wind.
Then Navy officers secured Eleanor and the weapon.
Arthur’s breathing weakened.
A medical team rushed onto the roof.
As they lifted him onto a stretcher, he reached toward me.
“Clarissa.”
I leaned closer.
“I tried to protect what I built.”
“You destroyed what you had.”
His eyes moved toward Audrey.
For the first time, he saw both daughters without ranking us.
“I’m sorry.”
It was too small.
Too late.
But it was real.
He survived the gunshot.
Eleanor was taken into federal custody.
Vale was captured in the flooded facility.
The engineers survived.
The gala guests were evacuated safely.
By sunrise, federal agents controlled Vance Maritime headquarters.
The Meridian archive was transferred to a secure military network.
The first decrypted file contained hundreds of transactions.
Then investigators found one labeled:
OPERATION HOMECOMING.
It was created only three months earlier.
The target was listed as Captain Clarissa Vance.
Objective:
Restore subject to command under controlled conditions.
I stared at Admiral Thorne.
“You knew I would return.”
He looked away.
The gala had not simply been a trap for my family.
