Chapter 9 - The Medal With Two Histories

The medal was an old Navy Cross.

My grandfather, Admiral James Vance, received it during the Cold War.

Before he died, he gave it to me and said, “Some honors are also warnings.”

I always believed he meant sacrifice.

Eleanor meant something else.

Arthur’s gaze locked on the medal pinned beneath my cloak.

“You had it all this time.”

“What does it open?”

He hesitated.

Admiral Thorne ordered him to answer.

My grandfather discovered a network of illegal weapons shipments conducted through private defense contractors and intelligence cutouts.

The network became known as Meridian.

Eleanor eventually took control of it.

Arthur supplied technology while pretending Vance Maritime operated only under lawful contracts.

The medal contained a physical cryptographic key created by my grandfather before his death.

Combined with the drive, it could unlock Meridian’s transaction archive.

Names.

Payments.

Assassinations.

Secret weapons sales.

Political bribery.

Everything.

“Why give it to me?” I asked.

Arthur looked toward my scars.

“Because he believed you would choose the Navy over the family.”

“He was right.”

Eleanor’s voice returned through the speakers.

“Remove the medal, Clarissa.”

“No.”

“Then the hostages die.”

A live video appeared.

Three Vance Maritime engineers sat bound inside an industrial facility.

Among them was Dr. Evan Rourke, the arrested software architect.

Someone had intercepted his federal transport.

Admiral Thorne spoke into his radio.

The convoy had been attacked fifteen minutes earlier.

Two agents were injured.

Rourke was taken.

Eleanor had planned multiple operations around the gala.

“Give me the key,” she said, “and the engineers live.”

Arthur whispered, “Do it.”

I looked at him.

“She will kill them anyway.”

“You don’t know her.”

“I know what she did to her daughters.”

Audrey flinched.

For the first time, she stood beside me rather than across from me.

“She’s right,” Audrey said. “Mother never leaves witnesses.”

Arthur stared at her.

His favored daughter had finally broken ranks.

Admiral Thorne asked whether the engineers could identify their location.

I studied the video.

A low mechanical vibration.

Salt corrosion on the walls.

A red emergency valve made by Vance Maritime.

I knew the facility.

It was an abandoned submarine assembly plant beneath the cliffs two miles north of the club.

The tunnels connected to the ocean.

And to Arthur’s property.

📖 Clarissa identified the hostage site, but Arthur admitted the underground facility contained an experimental weapon unstable enough to destroy the entire coastline. 👇
