Chapter 2 - The Doors Were Sealed

Security officers moved quietly into position.

The heavy ballroom doors closed.

Arthur looked from Admiral Thorne to the armed Navy security detail stationed along the walls.

“What is this?” he demanded.

“A controlled federal inquiry,” the admiral replied.

Audrey stepped back from me.

Her arrogance had not vanished, but fear had begun to sharpen her eyes.

“You can’t detain us at a private event.”

Admiral Thorne looked toward a Navy judge advocate near the entrance.

“Commander Ellis?”

The woman opened a leather folder.

“Vance Maritime Club is located on federally leased waterfront property and is hosting an event under Department of Defense sponsorship. Everyone present will remain until investigators complete the initial security review.”

Arthur’s face went pale.

I accepted a dark Navy cloak from one of the officers and placed it over my torn blouse.

My father stared at the insignia stitched inside.

Captain.

He had spent years telling people I had been dismissed in disgrace.

Audrey had called me unstable.

Arthur had removed my portrait from the family gallery and claimed my injuries came from a drunken accident overseas.

Yet the admiral had saluted me before everyone who mattered to him.

“What evidence?” Arthur asked.

I turned toward the enormous screen behind the stage.

“The kind you tried to bury.”

Three years earlier, my destroyer task group had been assigned to protect a classified weapons-testing corridor in the Arabian Sea.

The mission failed.

Not because of enemy superiority.

Because navigation data supplied by Vance Maritime Systems had been deliberately altered.

My father’s company had built the targeting software.

The false coordinates sent one American transport vessel into an ambush.

I led the rescue operation.

That was where I received the scars.

Forty-seven sailors survived.

Nine did not.

Arthur told the Pentagon the software had been sabotaged by a rogue officer.

He named me.

“I protected this family,” he said.

“You protected a contract.”

Audrey crossed her arms.

“You don’t have proof.”

Admiral Thorne nodded toward the screen.

The first classified file appeared.

A payment authorization signed by Audrey.

The recipient was an offshore engineering consultant tied to the corrupted navigation code.

Audrey stopped breathing.

Arthur turned toward her.

“What did you do?”
