Chapter 3 - The Payment With Audrey’s Signature

Audrey recovered quickly.
“That signature is forged.”
Commander Ellis enlarged the document.
“It was verified through biometric approval, encrypted token authentication, and a live facial-recognition check.”
Audrey’s eyes flicked toward Arthur.
He took one slow step toward her.
“You authorized this payment?”
“No. Dad, I swear.”
The offshore recipient was a company called Pelagos Technical Consulting.
On paper, it provided maritime risk analysis.
In reality, it had no employees, no office, and no legitimate contracts.
It existed only to move money.
The transfer had occurred twelve days before my mission.
Amount: $8.6 million.
Arthur lowered his voice.
“You told me Pelagos was a procurement intermediary.”
Audrey’s face changed.
That answer revealed too much.
Admiral Thorne noticed.
“So you knew the company existed, Mr. Vance.”
Arthur glared at him.
“I manage hundreds of vendors.”
I walked toward the screen.
“Pelagos purchased a software override key from one of your senior engineers.”
A photograph appeared.
The man was Dr. Evan Rourke, lead architect of Vance Maritime’s navigation platform.
Arthur had publicly claimed Rourke died in a boating accident two years earlier.
He had not.
Navy intelligence found him alive in Croatia.
He had been arrested that morning.
Audrey whispered, “That’s impossible.”
“He gave investigators the original override key,” I said. “He also gave them copies of every message you sent.”
Arthur turned fully toward her.
“You communicated with him?”
She shook her head.
Then the speakers played her recorded voice.
“Shift the corridor twelve nautical miles east. The Navy will blame weather or operator error.”
Guests reacted with stunned murmurs.
Audrey backed away from the screen.
“That recording was manipulated.”
Another voice followed.
Arthur’s.
“No casualties. Do you understand me? This is about delaying the trial, not killing sailors.”
My father went still.
He had not known that recording existed.
Neither had Audrey.
The admiral faced the room.
“Vance Maritime Systems manipulated a live Navy exercise to create a controlled failure. The purpose was to delay certification until a competing defense bid could be eliminated.”
Arthur looked at me.
“You were not supposed to be on that ship.”
“I volunteered when your software placed it in danger.”
His face briefly revealed something close to grief.
Then it hardened again.
“You have no idea what was at stake.”
“Nine sailors died.”
“Billions were at stake.”
The room became silent.
Arthur had finally said the truth aloud.
Then Commander Ellis opened a second file.
It showed someone had changed the mission roster hours before departure.
The authorization came from my own Navy account.
