Chapter 23 - The Uniform Waiting for Me

The uniform hung inside a secure Navy office.

Freshly tailored.

Captain’s insignia on the shoulders.

My restored ribbons arranged exactly as regulations required.

I stared at it for a long time.

The Navy had been my purpose.

It had also been the weapon used to discredit me.

Commander Ellis stood nearby.

“You do not owe the service your return.”

“Why offer it?”

“Because Meridian exposed vulnerabilities that still exist. We need someone who understands both the institution and the danger of worshipping it.”

I almost laughed.

“That sounds like punishment.”

“It may be.”

The task force would investigate defense corruption, contractor influence, covert procurement, and retaliation against whistleblowers.

It would report to an independent civilian panel.

I demanded authority to publish findings when classification was used to hide crimes.

They resisted.

I refused the role.

Two days later, they accepted.

I returned to active duty.

The first time I wore the uniform again, my scars remained hidden beneath it.

But they were no longer a secret.

I visited Arthur at the federal medical facility before assuming command.

He sat beside a window overlooking a gray courtyard.

One side of his body remained paralyzed.

He could understand speech but could answer only through a tablet.

I placed the new Resolute Maritime charter before him.

He read it.

His fingers moved slowly across the screen.

YOU ERASED ME.

“No. I stopped forcing others to carry your name.”

His face tightened.

I showed him the memorial list.

Nine names.

He stared at them for a long time.

Then typed:

I REMEMBERED THEIR NUMBER.

“But not their names.”

His eyes filled.

Perhaps that was the beginning of remorse.

Perhaps only grief for himself.

I no longer needed to decide.

Before leaving, I said, “Your company will build ships again. Just not for your legacy.”

He typed one final sentence.

YOU WERE ALWAYS THE BEST OF US.

I looked at him.

“No. I was simply the one who finally stopped protecting the worst.”

Outside, Audrey’s prison counselor contacted me.

Audrey had uncovered a coded message hidden inside Eleanor’s legal correspondence.
