Chapter 18 - The Ship Where I Began

The USS Resolute rested inside a naval heritage yard awaiting conversion into a museum.

I had reported aboard at twenty-two.

It was where I learned navigation, discipline, and how fear could exist beside duty.

We arrived before dawn.

The outer gate had been cut.

One security guard was unconscious but alive.

Inside the ship, emergency lights glowed red.

I remembered Daniel’s phrase.

Where Captain Vance first learned to command.

I was not a captain then.

But during a training emergency, I took control from an injured officer inside the auxiliary bridge.

We moved there.

The compartment had been searched.

Panels ripped open.

Wiring torn away.

Senator Cade’s men had not found the chip.

I looked at the old command chair.

During that training emergency, I dropped my qualification coin beneath it.

Daniel later found it and returned it.

He knew the story.

We removed the chair.

Beneath the mounting plate was a sealed magnetic capsule.

The chip lay inside.

Commander Ellis secured it.

Then a voice came through the ship’s intercom.

“Captain Vance, bring the capsule to the flight deck.”

Senator Cade.

He held Maria Reyes and the wounded security guard at gunpoint.

His men had followed us.

Admiral Thorne wanted to delay while tactical teams moved into position.

I took the capsule.

“Clarissa,” he warned.

“Daniel died protecting this. Maria will not.”

On the flight deck, Cade stood beside a waiting helicopter.

He looked like every polished politician who had praised military sacrifice without ever risking himself.

“You destroyed a useful system,” he said.

“Meridian?”

“A network that prevented wars.”

“You sold weapons to both sides.”

“Balance prevents domination.”

“Nine sailors died for your balance.”

“History will not remember nine sailors.”

I stepped closer.

“I will.”

He demanded the chip.

I threw the capsule toward the ocean.

One of his men ran after it.

The distraction gave Maria time to drop.

Navy snipers fired.

Cade’s guards fell wounded.

Cade grabbed me and pressed a gun beneath my jaw.

The capsule struck the deck.

I had thrown it short deliberately.

Thorne moved toward us.

Cade shouted, “One more step and she dies.”

I looked at the helicopter rotor behind him.

Then I drove my heel into his knee.

📖 Clarissa fought Cade on the deck of her first ship, but the senator revealed he had already copied the override chip years earlier. 👇
