Chapter 1 - The Scar They Called An Initiation

The moment Principal Dennis Holloway grabbed my son’s torn shirt and pulled it upward, I stopped hearing the courtroom.

I only saw Cameron’s face.

Fourteen years old.

Terrified.

Humiliated.

Trying not to cry.

The beige fabric lifted away from his back, revealing the large healing burn that had changed everything.

The courtroom gasped.

My son immediately lowered his eyes.

He hated people seeing it.

Not because of the scar.

Because of what it represented.

Holloway looked around the room like he was proving a point.

“Your boy should be grateful—real men call that scar an initiation.”

I was out of my chair before I realized it.

My hand caught his wrist.

Hard.

His expression changed instantly.

Not because I hurt him.

Because he finally understood something.

I wasn’t the scared father sitting quietly anymore.

I was a man protecting his child.

I pulled his hand away from Cameron.

“Don’t touch my son.”

My voice stayed calm.

That made him more nervous than shouting would have.

Holloway tried to pull free.

He couldn’t.

Behind him, three wealthy fathers sat with their expensive suits and confident smiles.

They had spent months believing money could protect their sons.

They believed Cameron was just a poor kid with a painful story.

Someone they could silence.

I stepped between Holloway and my son.

Cameron grabbed the back of my shirt.

His fingers were shaking.

I placed one hand on his shoulder.

“You’re okay.”

But I knew something.

He wasn’t okay.

Not yet.

The truth was still locked away.

Then one of the wealthy fathers stood.

And smiled.

Because he thought he still had control.
