The courtroom shifted.
The balance of power changed.
Everyone felt it.
The wealthy families had entered believing they controlled the story.
Then the judge opened my file.
Now they weren’t sure what story they were part of.
Holloway stepped forward.
“Your Honor, his military background is irrelevant.”
The judge looked at him.
“Perhaps.”
A pause.
“But your reaction to it is interesting.”
Holloway froze.
That was the problem with arrogance.
It made people careless.
The judge continued reviewing the file.
I stayed beside Cameron.
My only focus was him.
Not the judge.
Not the families.
Not the whispers.
My son.
Then Cameron quietly spoke.
“Dad?”
I looked down.
“Yeah?”
“Are they going to believe me?”
That question hurt more than anything.
Because he wasn’t asking about the case.
He was asking whether adults still protected children.
I crouched beside him.
“I believe you.”
He nodded.
Then the courtroom doors opened again.
A man entered carrying another sealed folder.
Not military.
Not legal.
Something else.
The wealthy fathers immediately recognized him.
