Chapter 4 - The File That Changed The Room

The judge read silently.
One page.
Then another.
The courtroom waited.
I remained still.
Because I knew something about classified records.
The most important things were often the things nobody explained.
The judge removed his glasses.
That was when everyone noticed.
The wealthy fathers stopped whispering.
Holloway stopped smiling.
The judge looked at me.
“Captain Rivera.”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
His voice lowered.
“Why is this section of your record still classified?”
Nobody moved.
Cameron looked at me.
Confused.
He knew I served.
But he didn’t know everything.
I never wanted him carrying the weight of my past.
The judge closed the file halfway.
“I need clarification.”
I nodded.
“Understood.”
One of the wealthy fathers laughed nervously.
“Is this supposed to scare us?”
Nobody answered.
Because it wasn’t a threat.
It was reality.
Then the judge looked back at the file.
And said something that changed the atmosphere completely.
“Someone went to great lengths to hide this.”
My eyes moved toward the wealthy fathers.
One of them looked away.
The same one who tried to stop the evidence.
Interesting.
