Chapter 2 - The Money Behind The Silence

The courtroom settled slowly.
But the arrogance remained.
The wealthy fathers looked at me like I was the problem.
Not their sons.
Not the injuries.
Not the evidence.
Me.
One of them adjusted his expensive watch.
“You’re making a mistake.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
I glanced at Cameron.
“They did.”
His attorney whispered something in his ear.
He ignored it.
People like him weren’t used to being challenged.
They were used to buying solutions.
Principal Holloway straightened his suit.
“You need to control your emotions, Captain.”
I almost laughed.
Control.
That was the word people used when they wanted victims to stay quiet.
I had controlled myself for months.
Every hospital visit.
Every nightmare.
Every time Cameron looked away from a mirror.
I controlled myself.
Until today.
The judge watched carefully.
He hadn’t chosen a side.
Not yet.
That mattered.
Then Holloway placed a folder on the table.
“The school maintains that this incident has been exaggerated.”
Cameron looked down.
I noticed.
He was shrinking.
Not physically.
Emotionally.
I leaned closer.
“Look at me.”
He did.
“You tell the truth.”
He nodded.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
A clerk entered carrying an evidence bag.
Everyone looked.
But before it reached the judge, one of the wealthy fathers suddenly stood.
“Stop.”
The word came too quickly.
Too desperately.
The room noticed.
And so did I.

Because innocent people don’t panic before seeing evidence.
