Chapter 1 - The Strap in the Wedding Hallway

“Stay away from him.”

Penelope Wheeler’s voice cracked through the mansion corridor like a gunshot.

Helen lunged toward the brown leather strap.

Penelope moved first.

She pulled ten-year-old Toby behind the folds of her wedding gown, planted her bare foot against a heavy wooden chair, and kicked with all her strength.

The chair shot sideways across the terracotta floor.

It crashed between Toby and Helen, blocking the older woman’s path.

Helen recoiled two steps.

Her hand remained outstretched.

Her face was not ashamed.

It was furious.

“He needed discipline.”

Penelope caught Helen’s wrist before she could reach across the chair. With one sharp movement, she twisted the hand away and tore the strap from her grasp.

Toby pressed himself against Penelope’s side.

His fingers knotted into the lace at her waist.

Penelope had been married for less than three hours.

Downstairs, the orchestra was still playing.

Champagne glasses were still being filled.

Two hundred guests still believed the Wheeler family was celebrating a perfect marriage.

Upstairs, her new husband’s son was trembling beside a punishment strap.

Penelope lowered it away from him.

“Toby,” she said carefully. “Look at me.”

The child looked past her instead.

Toward Conrad.

Her new husband stood near the arched doorway in his dark navy suit.

He had followed them from the ballroom.

Now he looked shocked.

But not confused.

Toby’s breathing became shallow.

Penelope felt his grip tighten.

Then the boy whispered the words that changed the entire night.

“Dad knew.”

Conrad stopped moving.

Helen lifted her chin.

Penelope slowly turned toward the man she had just married.

“Is that true?”

Conrad stepped around the displaced chair.

“Don’t destroy this family.”

Penelope stared at him.

Then she released the strap.

It struck the floor with a heavy slap.

She pulled her phone from the folds of her gown and pressed one button.

The camera lens faced Conrad and Helen.

Above the doorway, a tiny security camera blinked.

Conrad followed her gaze.

His face tightened.

“You already did,” Penelope said.

Then she noticed the dark envelope protruding from inside his suit jacket.

Toby recognized it too.

His face turned white.

Penelope seized the corner before Conrad could hide it.

A blurred official seal appeared.

Beneath it was the outline of a child-custody document.

Penelope looked at Toby.

Then at her husband.

“What did you make him sign?”

May you like

Conrad did not answer.

And downstairs, the wedding guests began applauding for a bride who had no idea whether her marriage would survive the next five minutes.
