Chapter 9 - The Mother Who Owned the Family
Police entered the underground room through the service tunnel.
Detective Rachel Morgan took control of the scene.
Helen was separated from Conrad.
Toby stayed beside Penelope.
Investigators copied Laura’s recordings and seized the trust documents.
The mechanic in the video was identified within hours.
His name was Dale Mercer.
He had worked for the Wheeler estate for nineteen years.
When police arrived at his home, he tried to flee.
He was arrested before midnight.
Mercer confessed the following morning.
Helen ordered him to damage Laura’s brake system.
She told him Conrad had approved it.
Conrad had not explicitly approved murder.
But Mercer said Conrad was present when Helen discussed “stopping Laura before she reached federal agents.”
Conrad claimed he believed Helen meant stopping the trust transfer.
Mercer disagreed.
“He knew it was the car.”
The prosecutor had to determine whether Conrad’s silence made him an accomplice.
Penelope sat beside Toby in a child advocacy center while detectives interviewed him.
He revealed that Helen began using the strap months after Laura’s death.
She called it “correction.”
She punished him for asking questions about his mother.
Conrad witnessed at least two incidents.
He never struck Toby.
He never stopped Helen either.
When Toby told him he was afraid, Conrad said, “Just do what Grandma says.”
That sentence mattered more than any denial.
After the interview, Conrad asked to see his son.
Penelope refused.
“You are not his legal guardian,” he said.
“Neither are you right now.”
Emergency custody had been granted to the state pending review.
Toby could be placed with distant relatives.
Or in temporary foster care.
He began shaking when the social worker explained.
Penelope held his hand.
“I’m not leaving you.”
The social worker looked at her wedding gown.
“You are not legally his stepmother if the marriage is annulled.”
Penelope understood the trap.
To protect Toby, she might have to remain legally tied to Conrad.
Samuel offered another solution.
Laura’s original trust named a backup guardian.
The name had been sealed.
They opened the document.
The guardian was not Conrad.
It was Penelope Hart.
Her maiden name.
Penelope stared at the page.
“I never met Laura.”
Samuel looked equally stunned.
Then Margaret remembered something.
Years earlier, Penelope had volunteered at Laura’s children’s technology foundation.
Laura had watched her work with disabled children.
