Chapter 10 - Why Conrad Chose Penelope
Penelope confronted Conrad in the courthouse holding room.
“Did you know Laura named me?”
He looked exhausted.
“Yes.”
The answer stunned her more than denial would have.
“That’s why you found me.”
Conrad lowered his eyes.
Three years after Laura’s death, he searched the trust documents and discovered Penelope’s name.
He tracked her through the foundation.
At first, he only intended to learn why Laura trusted her.
Then he began visiting the youth center where Penelope volunteered.
He watched her with children.
He introduced himself.
He asked her to dinner.
“You married me to gain control of the guardian clause.”
“No.”
“You targeted me.”
“At first.”
Penelope felt physically ill.
Conrad stood.
“Then I fell in love with you.”
She laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“You lied from the day we met.”
“I wanted Toby to have someone good.”
“You wanted someone Helen could manipulate.”
“No.”
“You let her hurt him.”
His face collapsed.
“I was trying to protect him from worse.”
Penelope stepped closer.
“There is always something worse when cowardice needs an excuse.”
Conrad began crying.
He admitted he knew Helen had threatened Laura.
He knew the car had been tampered with.
But he convinced himself the damage was minor.
He let Laura drive because stopping her meant confessing his own financial crimes.
His silence protected him.
Not her.
Not Toby.
Penelope looked through the glass at the man she had married.
The elegant wedding.
The private vows.
The promises.
Everything had been built on a hidden motive.
“Did you ever plan to tell me?”
“After the wedding.”
“Why after?”
“Because once we were married, Helen couldn’t remove you from Toby’s trust without exposing the documents.”
Penelope understood.
Conrad had used marriage as a legal shield.
He believed Penelope’s goodness would save Toby.
But he had not given her the truth required to protect him.
“You made me part of your plan without my consent.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No.”
She removed the marriage certificate copy from her purse.
“You are sorry the plan failed.”
Then Conrad gave her one final warning.
Helen had prepared a second trust.
If Conrad was arrested or declared unfit, control of Laura’s company would pass to the Wheeler Foundation.
Unless Toby personally rejected it before midnight on his eleventh birthday.
That date was three days away.
