Chapter 11 - Toby’s Eleventh Birthday

Helen was charged with conspiracy, child abuse, coercion, fraud, and Laura’s murder.

But her attorneys moved quickly.

They argued the videos were illegally obtained.

They claimed Mercer’s confession was coerced.

And they petitioned the family court to enforce the second trust before Toby’s birthday.

The document stated that if Toby failed to appear for the scheduled signing, silence would count as consent.

Samuel called the clause fraudulent.

But the judge assigned to the case was one of Helen’s longtime political allies.

A hearing was scheduled for the morning of Toby’s birthday.

Penelope became his emergency guardian the night before.

She did not sleep.

Toby sat at the kitchen table of the safe house, staring at a birthday cupcake.

“I don’t want to go to court.”

“You don’t have to be brave all day.”

“What if Grandma wins?”

Penelope crouched beside him.

“She has spent years making you believe adults always decide what happens to you.”

“Don’t they?”

“Not this time.”

Samuel arrived with new evidence.

Laura’s software company had located an encrypted file hidden in its medical platform.

The access code was Toby’s birthday.

When opened, it revealed Laura’s final corporate directive.

No transfer involving Toby’s shares could be approved without a live video statement from Toby made freely, outside the presence of any Wheeler family member.

The forced signatures were worthless.

Helen had known.

That was why she needed Toby frightened enough to make the statement himself.

At court, Helen entered wearing a dark suit instead of the charcoal gown.

She looked composed.

Powerful.

Unbroken.

Toby froze when he saw her.

Penelope took his hand.

Helen smiled.

“You’re confusing that child.”

Toby’s breathing changed.

Penelope leaned down.

“You can leave.”

He looked at the judge.

Then at the cameras.

Then at Helen.

“No.”

He walked to the witness chair.

The judge asked whether he wished the Wheeler Foundation to control his mother’s shares.

Helen stared at him.

Toby’s voice barely emerged.

“No.”

The judge leaned forward.

“Speak clearly.”

Toby looked at Penelope.

She did not tell him what to say.

She simply remained there.

He turned back.

“No. My mom left them to me.”

Helen stood.

“He has been coached!”

Toby flinched.

Then he took the bedroom key from his pocket and placed it on the table.

“You locked me in.”

The courtroom fell silent.

“And Dad let you.”

Conrad closed his eyes.

The judge had no choice.

The transfer was denied.

May you like

Toby had spoken freely.

And for the first time, Helen could not punish him for saying no.
