Chapter 8 - The Night Conrad Chose Silence
Laura’s recording continued.
“Conrad says he is afraid of his mother.”
Helen laughed bitterly.
“Pathetic.”
But her fingers trembled.
Laura described how Helen controlled the family foundation, the mansion, and several judges through political donations.
Conrad had grown up under her authority.
When he married Laura, he promised they would leave the Wheeler empire.
Then Laura’s company became valuable.
Helen changed the plan.
She wanted the patents.
The company’s software had won federal healthcare contracts.
Control would make the Wheeler family richer than ever.
“Conrad helped me create the first trust protecting Toby,” Laura said. “But when Helen threatened to expose his financial crimes, he withdrew.”
Penelope looked at Conrad.
“What crimes?”
Samuel answered.
“Conrad borrowed against foundation funds to cover gambling losses.”
Conrad looked away.
Helen had used those crimes to control him.
If he resisted, she would send him to prison.
So he stayed silent.
Laura’s voice softened.
“I still believe Conrad loves our son.”
Toby began crying.
“But love without courage will not protect him.”
Conrad covered his mouth.
Laura explained that she planned to take Toby and leave the mansion the next morning.
She had arranged a safe house.
A federal investigator was waiting.
Then the recording changed.
A second camera angle showed the mansion garage.
Helen stood beside Laura’s car.
She opened the hood.
A man in a mechanic’s uniform approached.
He removed something near the brake line.
Conrad stared at the screen.
“No.”
Helen’s face became expressionless.
Penelope looked at her.
“You sabotaged the car.”
Helen did not respond.
The video showed Conrad entering the garage later.
He spoke with Helen.
There was no sound.
Then he looked directly at the mechanic.
The mechanic handed him a small tool.
Toby stepped backward.
“Dad?”
Conrad moved toward the boy.
“I didn’t know what they had done.”
Penelope blocked him.
“Then what did you do with the tool?”
Conrad’s voice broke.
“I thought they had disabled the tracking device.”
The next clip showed Laura’s car leaving the estate.
Conrad watched from the doorway.
He did not stop her.
Hours later, she died after losing control on a mountain road.
Conrad sank into a chair.
“I didn’t know.”
Helen looked at him with disgust.
“You knew enough.”
The room went still.
