Chapter 4 - The Estate His Mother Left Behind

Toby’s mother, Laura, had not been born into the Wheeler family.

She had built her own company before marrying Conrad.

The company designed medical software for children with disabilities.

When Laura died in a car accident four years earlier, her shares were worth more than eighty million dollars.

Penelope had never known.

Conrad always described Laura as “someone who never cared about money.”

Samuel Pike stood in the corridor, visibly uncomfortable.

“Laura placed her shares in trust for Toby.”

“Then what is this?” Penelope asked.

Samuel looked at the document.

“A waiver.”

Conrad stepped between them.

“You’re violating attorney-client privilege.”

“I stopped representing you six months ago.”

Helen’s face tightened.

Penelope noticed.

“Why did you stop?”

Samuel hesitated.

“Because I was asked to certify a minor’s signature on an amended trust release.”

Penelope looked at Toby.

“His signature?”

“Yes.”

“Was it legal?”

“No.”

Helen’s voice cut through the hallway.

“It was necessary.”

Samuel turned toward her.

“You forced a child to waive an inheritance he could not legally waive.”

Helen pointed at Conrad.

“My son built that company with Laura.”

Conrad said nothing.

Samuel shook his head.

“Laura founded it before she met him.”

The old family story began collapsing.

Laura had not been a dependent wife.

She had been the source of the Wheeler fortune.

After her death, Conrad became temporary administrator of her shares until Toby turned eighteen.

But the trust restricted how the money could be used.

Conrad could not sell the company.

He could not borrow against Toby’s ownership.

He could not transfer control to Helen.

Unless Toby signed a waiver.

Penelope looked at the leather strap on the floor.

“How many times did they make him sign?”

Toby’s eyes filled.

“I don’t know.”

Helen lifted her chin.

“No one hurt him.”

Penelope picked up the strap by two fingers.

“Then what is this?”

Helen did not answer.

Samuel looked toward the tiny camera over the doorway.

“I installed that system after Laura’s accident.”

Conrad’s face sharpened.

“You told me the archive was erased.”

“I told you the household system was disconnected.”

Samuel looked at Penelope.

“The recordings are backed up off-site.”

Helen went still.

Conrad took one involuntary step backward.

Penelope understood.

The evidence was not hidden in the mansion.

It was somewhere they could not reach.

Samuel continued.

“Laura asked me to install it because she believed someone in this family was monitoring her.”

Penelope glanced at Toby.

“Before she died?”

“Yes.”

Samuel swallowed.

“And the final recording was made the night before her car went off the road.”

The custody envelope was no longer the deepest secret in the corridor.

Laura may have known she was in danger before she died.
