Chapter 6 - The Room Beneath the Nursery

Emergency lights turned the corridor red.
Toby began trembling.
Penelope pulled him against her.
“Stay with me.”
Conrad moved toward the wooden doorway.
Samuel blocked him.
“What did you lock?”
“Nothing that concerns you.”
Helen stepped over the leather strap and seized Toby’s arm.
Penelope caught her hand and pushed it away.
“Do not touch him.”
Helen hissed, “You have no idea what that boy has done.”
Penelope looked down at Toby.
“What does she mean?”
Toby stared at the floor.
Conrad reached the doorway.
Then a voice came from the darkness.
“Stop.”
It belonged to Margaret Ellis, the Wheeler family’s longtime house manager.
She stood at the stairwell holding an emergency lantern.
Margaret had worked in the mansion for twenty-seven years.
Penelope had always thought she was loyal to Helen.
Now Margaret pointed toward Conrad’s remote.
“That button sealed the room beneath Toby’s nursery.”
Samuel’s expression changed.
“You told me that room was empty.”
Margaret looked at him.
“It contains Laura’s private servers.”
Conrad lunged toward her.
Samuel caught his shoulder.
The two men struggled.
Penelope kept Toby behind her.
Helen screamed at Margaret.
“You were paid to keep quiet.”
“I was paid to manage a home,” Margaret replied. “Not imprison a child.”
She handed Penelope a second brass key.
“The one Toby carries opens the cabinet under his bed. This one opens the room below it.”
Toby looked up.
“My mom’s room?”
Margaret nodded.
Before Laura died, she had built a secure digital archive beneath the nursery.
She stored company records, trust documents, and personal recordings there.
After the accident, Helen ordered the room sealed.
Conrad claimed the key had been lost.
Margaret had kept a copy.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” Penelope asked.
Margaret’s eyes filled.
“Helen threatened my grandson. He works for the family company.”
Helen scoffed.
“You accepted our money.”
“Yes.”
Margaret looked at Toby.
“And I have hated myself every day.”
Police pounded on the mansion’s lower doors.
Conrad’s remote had sealed the main entrance too.
Samuel shouted toward the stairwell for officers to use the east terrace.
Penelope looked at the key.
“What is inside Laura’s server?”
Margaret’s face went pale.
“The video she made the night before she died.”
Conrad stopped struggling.
That reaction told Penelope more than words could.

Toby’s mother had not left behind a simple farewell.
She had left evidence Conrad and Helen were terrified to let anyone see.
