Chapter 5 - The Wedding That Became a Lockdown

Conrad reached for Samuel.
Penelope stepped between them.
“Don’t.”
Samuel backed toward the staircase.
“I came because your assistant called me. She said Helen brought the waiver upstairs.”
Conrad looked toward his mother.
“You told me it was in the bank vault.”
“I moved it.”
“Why?”
“Because Penelope has been asking questions.”
Penelope stared at Helen.
“You searched my room.”
Helen did not deny it.
Downstairs, the band changed songs.
The celebration continued.
No one knew the groom’s family was unraveling above them.
Penelope picked up the strap and placed it on a side table where no one could reach it.
Then she gave Toby the bedroom key.
“Go into the room and lock the door from the inside.”
Toby shook his head.
“I don’t want to be alone.”
“You won’t be.”
She took his hand.
Conrad blocked the path.
“You’re not taking him.”
“He is frightened of you.”
“I’m his father.”
“Then start acting like one.”
His nostrils flared.
For one second, Penelope saw the same entitlement Helen carried.
Conrad had spent his life believing the Wheeler name made resistance temporary.
He looked at her phone.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“I’m ending the wedding.”
His face changed.
“Penelope.”
She slipped off her wedding ring.
Helen watched in disbelief.
“You would humiliate this family in front of everyone?”
Penelope placed the ring inside Conrad’s hand.
“You humiliated yourselves before I arrived.”
Then she called 911.
Conrad grabbed the phone.
Penelope held on.
Samuel stepped between them.
“Touch her again and I testify to it.”
Conrad released the phone.
Penelope reported suspected child abuse, coercion, and fraudulent estate documents.
She gave the mansion address.
Helen walked to the window.
“You think police will storm a Wheeler wedding because a spoiled boy is upset?”
Samuel answered.
“They will when the child’s trust is already under federal review.”
Conrad turned.
“What?”
Samuel explained that Laura’s company had flagged unusual transfers six months earlier.
Federal investigators had contacted him.
He had been cooperating.
The wedding had not delayed the investigation.
It had concentrated every suspect in one house.
Sirens began sounding beyond the estate gates.
Toby clutched Penelope’s hand.
Conrad looked from the windows to Samuel.
Then he reached inside his jacket for a second object.
Not another document.
A small remote control.
He pressed a button.

The corridor lights went out.
And somewhere beneath the mansion, a security door slammed shut.
