Chapter 13 - The Marriage That Never Began

Penelope filed for annulment.

Conrad did not contest it.

In his final letter before sentencing, he wrote:

I loved you, but I used you first. I understand now that love cannot repair the way it begins.

Penelope read the letter once.

Then placed it in Toby’s legal archive.

Not as a keepsake.

As evidence of the truth.

The Wheeler mansion was seized during the fraud case.

Laura’s company shares returned fully to Toby’s trust.

Until he turned twenty-five, an independent board would manage the assets.

Penelope accepted the role of guardian but refused control over the money.

“I want every decision audited,” she told Samuel.

“You don’t trust yourself?”

“I don’t want Toby to ever need to wonder.”

The mansion was eventually transferred to the trust.

Toby did not want to live there.

Neither did Penelope.

Together, they moved into a smaller house near the Connecticut coast.

It had no ballroom.

No servants’ wing.

No locked corridor.

Toby chose his own bedroom.

The first thing he did was remove the door lock completely.

Penelope kept it in a box with the leather strap and forced documents.

One afternoon, Toby asked, “Why keep them?”

“So no one can ever say it didn’t happen.”

He nodded.

Then he asked the question she had been expecting.

“Are you still my mom?”

Penelope sat beside him.

“I’m your guardian.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked into the eyes of the child Laura had once chosen her to protect.

“I didn’t marry your father long enough to become your stepmother.”

Toby looked down.

“But I chose you.”

His eyes filled.

“Forever?”

Penelope held out her hand.

“That part is up to both of us.”

Toby took it.

“Then forever.”

Months later, the court approved Penelope’s petition to adopt him.

On the final page, Toby signed his name voluntarily.

No one held his wrist.

No one threatened him.

No strap rested nearby.

The judge asked whether he understood what he was signing.

Toby smiled at Penelope.

“Yes.”

“What does it mean?”

“It means I get to stay with the person who stayed for me.”

May you like

Penelope cried openly.

This time, no one called emotion weakness.
