Chapter 1 - The Birthday Party Went Silent

Within the first second, Claire Bennett appeared at the top of the staircase with her six-year-old daughter locked against her chest.

She did not walk down.

She charged.

Her shoulder clipped the cream-colored wall as she turned the corner, but her grip on Lily never loosened.

The child’s yellow unicorn dress was wrinkled.

Her beige stuffed rabbit bounced against her ribs.

One silver glitter barrette hung crookedly in her long brown hair.

Her left cheek was swollen and red.

No blood.

No open wound.

But enough to stop every conversation in the house.

Red ambulance light swept through the open front door and washed over Claire’s face.

She reached the bottom step and looked directly at her parents.

“They did this.”

The champagne flute in Patricia Bennett’s hand remained lifted.

Robert Bennett straightened his shoulders as though posture alone could restore control.

“That’s absurd.”

Claire turned Lily’s injured cheek away from him.

“She was asleep.”

The room froze beneath the pink-and-gold birthday balloons.

David, Claire’s older brother, lowered his cake fork.

He would not meet her eyes.

Patricia slowly lowered her champagne.

Instead of looking at Lily, she glanced toward the cake table.

Behind several guests stood Madison, David’s eight-year-old daughter, dressed in a pink satin party dress and holding a new tablet.

A small smile touched Patricia’s mouth.

“Only my real granddaughter matters.”

David stared at his mother.

Robert turned sharply toward his wife.

She had said too much.

Two paramedics rolled a white stretcher through the open door.

A police officer followed.

Claire immediately moved toward them.

One paramedic checked Lily’s breathing while the other supported the child’s head.

Robert placed his glass on the side table so quickly that it struck the wood.

The officer looked past him.

Up the staircase.

Toward the closed guest-room door.

Robert shifted sideways, blocking part of the view.

The officer noticed.

He lifted one hand.

“Who closed that door?”

Robert looked upstairs.

His face drained of color.

Inside his trouser pocket, something metallic shifted.

And Claire realized her father had not been standing beside the staircase by accident.
