Chapter 7 - Patricia’s Real Reason
Police arrested Patricia before sunset.
Robert was detained for questioning.
The liquid bottle recovered from the guest room contained a prescription sleep aid that belonged to Patricia.
The dose was not intended to kill Lily.
That did not make it safe.
Or legal.
Patricia’s attorney immediately described the incident as a terrible mistake.
Claire’s mother insisted she only wanted Lily to sleep through the photo session.
But investigators found messages between Patricia and the family photographer.
The photographs were for a campaign announcing Madison as the “next generation” representative of the Bennett Foundation.
Claire had never agreed to let Lily be excluded.
Patricia believed Lily weakened the family image.
Claire was divorced.
She worked as a public-school counselor.
Lily attended a neighborhood school.
David was married to a surgeon.
Madison attended an elite academy.
Patricia had built her identity around social status.
She could tolerate Claire’s independence privately.
She could not tolerate it in photographs.
The cruel sentence downstairs had been the truth.
Only her “real granddaughter” mattered.
Not biologically.
Socially.
Madison looked like the future Patricia wanted to display.
Lily reminded her that Claire had rejected the family plan.
Investigators also found deleted messages.
Patricia had written to Robert before the party:
Keep Claire busy until the photographer finishes.
Robert answered:
What about Lily?
Patricia replied:
I’ll handle her.
Robert knew there was a plan to isolate the child.
He claimed he never knew sedatives would be used.
But after Lily fell, he chose silence.
He locked the door.
He blocked the stairs.
He hid the key.
He watched his granddaughter’s mother search downstairs while the child remained injured above them.
When Claire asked where Lily was, Robert said:
“She needs rest. Stop hovering.”
That sentence was also captured on a hallway microphone.
