Chapter 10 - The Woman Robert Erased
Claire visited Hannah’s medical facility.
Hannah used a wheelchair and spoke slowly after a traumatic brain injury.
But her memory was clear.
She knew Claire’s name.
“I saw your graduation picture,” she said.
Claire sat beside her.
“My father showed you?”
“No. I found it online.”
Robert had never brought family photographs.
Never told Hannah about Lily.
Never introduced her to David or Claire.
He paid the bills and called that responsibility.
Hannah’s mother had died years earlier.
Robert became her only relative.
Yet he kept her hidden.
Claire asked why she continued accepting his money.
“Because the facility would discharge me without it.”
“Did he ever promise to acknowledge you?”
“Every year.”
Hannah gave a tired smile.
“He always needed more time.”
Claire recognized the pattern.
Robert did not directly create every injury.
He simply delayed the truth until others carried the consequences.
He delayed acknowledging Hannah.
He delayed confronting Patricia.
He delayed calling help for Lily.
Robert’s cowardice often wore the clothes of patience.
Claire contacted a disability-rights attorney.
Hannah had legal claims to funds Robert controlled through the hidden trust.
The account was not charity money.
It came from a private inheritance Robert received before his marriage.
Patricia could not take it.
But Robert had used Hannah’s dependence to keep her silent.
Claire offered Hannah something different.
A choice.
“You can remain private.”
Hannah looked at her.
“Or?”
“You can meet your family.”
Hannah’s eyes filled.
“Would they want me?”
Claire thought about Patricia’s voice.
