Chapter 6 - The Child They Chose to Protect

Claire listened to the officer’s description in silence.

She did not scream.

She did not cry.

Her body became still.

“What did Madison do?” she asked.

“Nothing criminal.”

The footage showed Madison standing near the bathroom door.

She was frightened.

She asked whether Lily needed her mother.

Patricia answered:

“Lily is always causing trouble.”

Then she told Madison to return downstairs and say nothing.

Madison obeyed.

Not because she was cruel.

Because every adult in the room taught her that silence was loyalty.

David arrived at the hospital without his parents.

He stood outside Lily’s room for ten minutes before Claire allowed him inside.

“I didn’t know,” he said.

Claire looked at him.

“You knew they favored Madison.”

“Yes.”

“You knew the party was really for her.”

“Yes.”

“You knew that door locked from the outside.”

His face fell.

“Yes.”

“Then you knew enough.”

David lowered his head.

“I saw Mom come downstairs from the guest room. Her hands were shaking.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I asked where Lily was. She said she was sleeping.”

“You believed her?”

“No.”

The honesty hurt more.

He had not believed Patricia.

He simply chose not to challenge her.

“Why?”

David looked through the glass at his daughter.

“Because every time I confronted Mom, she threatened to remove Madison from the school trust.”

Claire stared at him.

“So you traded my daughter’s safety for your daughter’s tuition.”

“No.”

“That is exactly what you did.”

David began to cry.

Claire felt nothing for him.

Not yet.

A nurse entered.

Lily was awake enough to answer simple questions.

Claire sat beside her and held her hand.

“Sweetheart, do you remember what happened?”

Lily nodded slightly.

“Grandma gave me funny water.”

“Then what?”

“She said I couldn’t be in the pictures.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“She said Madison looked more like the family.”

David turned away.

Lily continued.

“I tried to go downstairs. Grandma grabbed me. I fell.”

“Did Grandpa help you?”

“He picked me up.”

Claire almost felt relief.

Then Lily added:

“But Grandma said people would blame her. Grandpa locked the door.”

The grandfather had not caused the injury.

He had chosen the cover-up.
