Chapter 12 - The Charges
Patricia was charged with child endangerment, administering a controlled substance without consent, unlawful restraint and evidence tampering.
Robert faced charges for unlawful confinement, obstruction, child endangerment and interfering with an emergency call.
Foundation-related financial charges followed.
The camera footage made denial impossible.
Patricia still tried.
She claimed Claire exaggerated Lily’s condition to punish the family.
She said the child stumbled because she was disobedient.
She accused Madison of being confused.
At a pretrial hearing, the prosecutor played the recording from the guest room.
Patricia’s own voice filled the courtroom:
“Only Madison belongs in the pictures.”
Then Lily’s frightened voice:
“I want my mommy.”
Robert’s response followed:
“Keep her quiet until the guests leave.”
Claire did not look at her parents.
She watched the judge.
Patricia’s bail conditions prohibited contact with either child.
Robert’s attorney requested leniency because he had eventually cooperated.
The prosecutor corrected him.
“He cooperated after the camera was found.”
Robert lowered his head.
The court froze foundation assets.
An independent board took control.
The personal expenses were repaid through the sale of Robert and Patricia’s vacation property.
The child-welfare programs continued under new leadership.
The foundation name was removed.
Hannah’s trust was transferred to an independent guardian.
She moved to a smaller facility closer to Claire.
For the first time, she attended a family dinner.
No champagne.
No photographers.
No carefully arranged balloons.
Lily showed Hannah the stuffed rabbit.
Madison showed her how to use a video-calling app.
David cooked badly.
Claire laughed despite herself.
Hannah looked around the table.
“This is what he was hiding from me?”
Claire nodded.
Hannah smiled.
