Chapter 11 - Madison Told the Truth
Madison struggled after the party.
She stopped sleeping alone.
She became afraid of closed doors.
David took her to a child therapist.
During one session, she revealed something the camera had not fully captured.
Patricia had planned to photograph Madison beside Lily’s cake.
She told Madison the party would become hers once Lily fell asleep.
Madison refused.
Patricia said:
“Someday everything here will be yours. You need to learn how this family works.”
Madison asked whether Lily would receive another party.
Patricia answered:
“She should be grateful we invited her.”
When Lily woke and tried to leave the room, Madison moved toward the door.
Patricia blocked her.
After Lily fell, Madison wanted to call Claire.
Robert took the tablet from her hand.
He deleted the partial emergency number she had entered.
Then he told her:
“Good children obey adults.”
Madison carried that guilt downstairs.
She stood behind the guests while Claire accused the family.
She believed she had helped hurt Lily.
David brought her to the hospital.
Madison entered Lily’s room holding a small paper bag.
Inside was the tablet Patricia had given her.
“I don’t want it,” Madison said.
Lily looked at her cousin.
“Why?”
“Because Grandma gave it to me instead of you.”
“It wasn’t my birthday present.”
“It was supposed to make me better than you.”
Lily thought for a moment.
Then she moved the stuffed rabbit aside.
“You can sit here.”
Madison began crying.
Not dramatically.
Quietly.
The two girls held hands.
Claire watched from the doorway with David.
He whispered:
“They’re better than all of us.”
Claire answered:
“They haven’t learned our excuses yet.”
David later gave police a full statement.
He admitted seeing his father take Madison’s tablet.
He admitted knowing something was wrong upstairs.
He admitted choosing silence because he feared losing money and status.
